Maliit na Rice at Corn Millers Nanganganib Mawala Dahil sa Hamon ng Importasyon 🤬

Sa nakalipas na dekada, libu-libong maliit na rice at corn millers sa Pilipinas ang nagsara, na nag-iwan ng mahigit 1,000 barangay na walang lokal na serbisyo sa paggiling. Ayon sa datos ng Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), bumaba ng 6.3% ang bilang ng mga barangay na may rice at corn mills, mula 16,476 noong 2013 patungong 15,436 noong 2023. Ang pagbagsak na ito ay bunsod ng kumpetisyon mula sa malalaking negosyo sa paggiling na nakikinabang sa mas murang inangkat na butil. Ayon sa Philippine Chamber of Agriculture and Food Inc. (PCAFI), ang deregulasyon at mababang taripa sa mga inangkat na produkto ang pangunahing dahilan ng trend na ito. Sinabi ni PCAFI President Danilo Fausto na ang malalaking miller ang nangingibabaw sa merkado, na nagpapahirap sa maliliit na operator na makalaban. Sa resumption ng sesyon ng Senado sa January 13, Lunes, hinikayat ni Senador Lito Lapid ang kanyang mga kasamahang Senador na aprubahan na ang panukala nyang ideklara bilang national historical-cultural heritage zone ang Quiapo sa Manila city. Salig sa Senate Bill No. 1471, tinukoy ni Lapid na malaki ang naging bahagi ng Quiapo sa paghubog at paglinang ng ating kasaysayan, tradisyon, sining, kultura, turismo, relihiyon at ekonomiya.
